This study aims to understand how people from different cultural backgrounds accept Traditional Korean Medicine(TKM) by examining usage patterns among migrants. To this end, the study first reviewed existing literature on migrants’ use of TKM and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Alongside this literature review, anthropological fieldwork was conducted, including participant observation and interviews. Participant observation was carried out at five weekend free clinics, and formal interviews were conducted with five Korean medicine doctors and six migrants.
The study found that while a small number of migrants use TKM as a form of alternative medicine, the majority seek acupuncture treatment for musculoskeletal disorders. TKM functions as a form of accessible primary care for migrants. These patterns in migrants' use of TKM are interpreted through the lens of the biomedicalization of TCM as it becomes integrated into Western biomedical systems such as those in the U.S. and Europe. Migrants’ use of TKM provides a compelling case that illustrates how medicine is transmitted, accepted, and transformed as a cultural element. Further research is needed to understand the use of TKM from a broader perspective of migrants’ access to Korean healthcare resources.
