Today, the Korean-American community in the United States is experiencing a shift
in the functions and roles of ethnic enclaves due to generational shifts. While the
traditional Korean community provided first-generation immigrants with various
resources and strengthened ties with Korea and among immigrants, today's 1.5 and
second-generation Koreans are building and maintaining networks that differ from
those of the first generation. Focusing on the influence of social capital and control
within one's network on cultural identity, this study examined how the capital and
norms (social control) of these networks influence the cultural identity of 1.5 and
second-generation Koreans. Furthermore, it explored whether the influence of the
Korean-American community on first-generation Koreans persists across generations.
In-depth interviews with 17 participants revealed that their identities were influenced
by their peer groups and length of residence in the host country. Unlike
first-generation Koreans, they possessed small networks of acquaintances focused on
strong ties with their own groups rather than institutional networks like Korean
churches. Church membership also provided greater access to capital. Furthermore, in
terms of social control, they sought to follow the social norms of the organization
where they felt a sense of belonging, and actively embraced the culture to strengthen
recognition and a sense of belonging. Therefore, whether it was an American or
Korean church, they displayed a cultural identity transformed by the social capital and
control of the organization.
