초록
타국에서의 유학 생활 중 예기치 못한 사고로 장애를 입는 일은 한 개인의 생애를 흔드는 실존적위기일 수 있다. 그러나 그간 다문화 시대에 접어든 한국 사회에서는 유학생의 중도 장애 경험에
거의 주목하지 않았다. 본 연구의 목적은 한국에서 중도 시각장애인이 된 한 중국인 유학생의 생
애 이야기를 자세히 이해하는 것에 있다. 이를 위해, 한국 유학 과정에서 중도 시각장애인이 된
20대 중국인 유학생과 약 11개월에 걸쳐 심층 면담을 진행하였다. 수집한 자료는
Mandelbaum(1973)이 제시한 생애사 분석틀에 따라 탐구하였다. 연구결과, 연구참여자의
중도 시각장애 경험은 다음의 세 차원으로 구분되었다. 첫째, 삶의 영역은 ‘중국 안에서 빼어나
지 못했던 날 벗어나려 방황하며 시작한 유학 생활’이었다. 둘째, 전환점은 ‘시각장애가 앗아간
미래 앞에 갑자기 종잡을 수 없게 된 인생’이었다. 셋째, 적응은 ‘흐려진 시선으로 다시 끌어안게
된 세상’으로 확인되었다. 이러한 발견점에 근거해, 한국생활 중 중도 장애를 겪게 된 중국인 유
학생에 대한 사회적 관심의 필요성을 강조하였으며, 특히 시각장애로 갑작스러운 위기를 겪는
유학생을 지원할 방법을 모색하였다. 본 연구는 재한 중국인 유학생이 겪는 중도 시각장애 문제
를 연구참여자의 목소리로 구체적으로 조명했다는 점에서 학술적 의의를 지닌다. 이러한 결과
를 바탕으로, 타국에서 갑자기 위기를 맞게 된 시각장애 유학생을 위한 사회적 관심과 실천적 지
원 방안을 논의하였다
Becoming disabled due to an unexpected accident while studying in a foreign
country can constitute an existential crisis. This study explores the life story of a
Chinese international student who became visually impaired in Korea. In-depth
interviews were conducted over approximately 11 months. The collected data were
analyzed within Mandelbaum’s (1973) life history framework. The findings revealed
that the participant’s experience of acquiring visual impairment mid-course can be
understood in three areas: in the dimension of ‘A study abroad journey that began with
wandering in search of escape from an unremarkable life in China,’ in the turning
point of ‘A life suddenly rendered directionless when the future was stolen by visual
impairment,’ and in adaptation to ‘A world once again embraced, albeit perceived
through blurred vision.’ Based on these findings, this study underscores the need for
greater social awareness and practical support for Chinese international students in
Korea who experience disability mid-course, drawing on the lived experience of a
visually impaired individual, to better support their academic continuity and everyday
adaptation.
