초록

South Korea has become a country of new immigration from the 1990s, due to internal demand driven by structural shortages of labour and brides. Although migratory flows are indeed driven by the guest country’s demand (the so called ‘pull’ factors), immigrants have different histories and motivations for residing and working in a given country, a ‘push’ perspective that tends to be underrepresented in literature. In response to a glaring lack of empirical data on immigrants, this study presents new data evidence based on a purposive quota sample collected in Seoul and Gyeong-gi area between 2015 and 2016. Data findings on living, working and welfare access for immigrants in South Korea, differentiated by country of origin (China, Vietnam, Nepal, North Korea), highlight an overall reality of outsiderness, both in society and in the labour market, and limited welfare access, when compared to South Koreans’ averages. Descriptive statistics and ANOVA analyses reveal that social exclusion and welfare coverage do differ depending on immigrants’ countries of birth and visa type.

1990년대 이래 한국은 이민국가가 되었다. 이민의 주된 이유는 노동인력의 결여와 결혼신부의 부족에 의해서 주도된 내재적인 요구(이른 바 ‘풀’ 요인)에 기인한다. 이민자의 유입은 방문국가의 요구에 의해 좌우되지만 (‘풀’ 요인), 결국에는 한국을 떠나는 여부는 이민자들의 현황과 개인적인 사정(‘푸시’ 요인) 등에 따라 결정하게 된다. 이러한 ‘푸시’ 요인에 대해서 관심을 두며 이민자들의 실증적인 현황을 파악할 필요가 있다. 이 연구는 2015년과 2016년 사이에 서울과 경기 지역에서 수집된 의도적 할당표본에 근거한 새로운 데이터를 제시한다. 한국의 이민자들이 출신국가(중국, 베트남, 네팔, 북한)별로 구분한 다음에 이들의 고용, 복지접근 및 사회적 배제 등에 대해 기술적으로 조사하였다.
