초록

이 연구는 한국계 및 중국계, 일본계, 베트남계, 필리핀계, 인도계 등 6개의 주요 아시아계 미국인 집단을 포함하여 그들의 인종 및 민족간 통혼유형을 2000년 미국 센서스 자료를 통혼표에 기초한 대수선형모형(log-linear models)을 이용하여 분석하였다. 기존의 연구가 아시아계 미국인을 하나로 묶어서 하위집단의 다양성을 제대로 반영하지 못한 반면에 본 연구는 각각의 하위집단이 통혼유형에서 어떠한 차이를 나타낼 것인가에 주된 연구관심을 두고 있다. 또한 본 연구는 아시아계 통혼유형의 특징인 여성과 남성의 비대칭적인 족외혼 경향 및 범아시아계 통혼(pan-Asian intermarriage) 등의 현상이 출신국가 별로 어떠한 차이를 보이는지를 분석하였다. 분석결과, 출신국가별로 통혼유형이 매우 상이하게 나타났으며 각각의 하위집단에서 독특한 특징이 발견되었다. 예를 들자면, 일본계나 필리핀계에서 족외혼의 경향이 상대적으로 매우 강하게 나타난 반면, 베트남계는 다른 집단에 비해 그러한 경향이 현저하게 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 족외혼에서 아시아계 여성이 동족인 남성에 비해 비대칭적으로 족외혼의 비율이 높은 경향은 한국계, 중국계, 필리핀계로부터 발견되었지만 일본계나 인도계에서는 나타나지 않았다. 비록 백인들과의 결혼이 몇몇 집단에서는 여전히 지배적인 족외혼의 유형으로 나타났지만 범아시아계 통혼의 경향이 모든 집단에서 강하게 나타났으며 이러한 경향은 특히 베트남계, 중국계, 인도계에서 두드러졌다. 이 연구의 결과가 함의하는 바는 아시아계 미국인 안의 다양성을 고려할 때 이들을 대상으로 하는 관련분야의 연구는 개별 하위집단으로 나누어 분석하는 것이 바람직하다는 것이다. 또한 다양한 이민자 집단이 결혼을 통해 거주국사회에 통합되어 가는 과정을 단선적인 것으로 해석하는 전통적인 동화이론(the traditional assimilation theory) 보다는 상이한 통혼유형을 통해 여러 경로의 인종 및 민족집단 간의 관계가 형성될 수 있음을 가정하는 분절동화론(the segmented assimilation theory)이 아시아계 미국인의 통혼을 분석함에서 보다 나은 설명력이 있다고 할 것이다.

This study systemically analyzes intermarriage patterns among Asian Americans, one of the fastest-growing racial groups and who have one of the highest intermarriage rates in the United States. Utilizing the 2000 US Census PUMS data, interracial and interethnic marriage patterns of six major Asian groups in the country are examined. The results from log-linear models reveal that intermarriage patterns of Asian subgroup vary greatly showing unique marital signature in which each Asian subgroup has a quite different intermarriage rate and the gendered pattern in intermarriage, where Asian women intermarry at a higher rate than men, is not pervasive across all Asian subgroups. It is also found that the marriage to a non-Hispanic white is still dominant for some of the groups, but the propensity of pan-Asian intermarriage is quite strong across all Asian subgroups. My study suggests that the segmented assimilation theory, which summarizes how different patterns of intergroup relations are forming among diverse immigrant groups through interracial and interethnic marriages, has more explanatory power than traditional assimilation theory in analyzing Asian American intermarriage.
