초록

본 연구의 목적은 시간제 가사서비스가 전문화와 세분화되고 있는 추세에서 다시 입주 가정부 형태로 한국의 중산층 가정에서 가사･육아서비스를 하며 살아가는 중국동포 여성의 한국 가정에서의 경험을 특히 고용주와의 관계에 초점을 맞춰 살피는 것이다. 고용주와의 관계란 여성간의 관계이고 이는 다시 전근대적 신분관계에 입각한 가정부(하녀)의 속성이 어떤 부분은 명백하고 또 어떤 부분은 덜 명백하게 묻어있는 복합적인 것인 바, 이 복합성에는 계급은 물론 국적, 가난을 잣대로 한 중국동포에 대한 차별성이 작용한다. 전근대적 관계의 잔존으로 인한 속성으로부터 고용주와의 위계는 뚜렷하여 조선족 가사노동자는 보이지 않고 귀먹은 존재라는 점에서 예속성을 내포하고 있다. 그러나 인간으로서의 존엄에 대한 심리적 공격을 비껴가는 기제가 있음을 밝히고 그 의미를 분석하였다. 마지막으로 가사노동, 특히 조선족이모의 입주가사노동이 전문화된 노동으로 인정받지 못하는 문제들에 대하여 논의하였다.

Many Korean-Chinese migrant women are working as live-in domestics for middle-class working mothers in Korea. These domestics are middle aged--or older--and have come alone to Korea, leaving their own families behind in China. As the numbers of middle-class married Korean women working outside the home increases, working mothers are hiring Korean-Chinese migrant women who are called “Chosunjok-imo” (“Korean ethnic aunt”). For working mothers, the benefits of hiring Chosunjok-imo are several: they speak the same language, they are willing to live-in, and they cost little. Even though kinship terminology is used to call Chosunjok-imos, they are not treated as such. Differences about them, based on modernity standards, are used to confirm their subordination as domestic servants. This study focuses on the relationship between the domestics and mistresses in the household who hire them, using the methodology of participant observation and interview. This examination considers within the continuum of servant-mistress dynamics on one end, and Taylorized domestics on the other. The findings are as follows: domestics assess their employers and their own lives based on an understanding of social realities and on distinct moral values, which give domestics the strength not to be damaged by the negative conceptualizations on which their treatment is based. The lack of professionalization among these workers is also discussed, with a focus on the characteristics of being live-in domestics.
