초록

이 연구는 이민자들의 이민국에 대한 빠른 적용이 오히려 이민자들에게 부정적인 영향을 미친다는 이민의 역설(Immigration Paradox) 현상이 한국사회에서도 나타나고 있는지를 한국청소년정책연구원의 ‘다문화 청소년 패널자료’를 활용하여 살펴보고 있다. 이민의 역설 현상에 따르면 이민자 부모가 본국 문화를 유지할수록 이민자 자녀들에게 성장하면서 겪게 되는 차별과 불리한 상황들을 극복하는데 중요한 역할을 담당할 수 있다고 주장하고 있다. 이 연구의 분석결과에 따르면 다문화 청소년들의 집단괴롭힘 피해경험은 자아존중감에 부정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 하지만 다문화 청소년들이 외국인 부모와 의사소통시 외국인 부모의 나라말을 더 많이 사용할수록(이중언어사회화 정도가 높을수록) 집단 괴롭힘 피해경험이 자아존중감에 미치는 부정적인 영향을 감소시키는 것으로 나타나고 있다. 이런 분석결과는 한국의 동화주의 위주의 다문화 지원정책의 한계가 존재할 가능성과 함께 한국사회 다문화가정 청소년들을 대상으로 이민의 역설에 따른 부정적인 요인들을 감소시키기 위한 학문적･정책적 시사점을 제시해 준다.

Although faster acculturation to a host society is thought to be beneficial for immigrant families, culminating research evidences point to a troubling pattern that higher acculturation is associated with more negative developmental outcomes. This paradoxical phenomenon has been named The Immigrant Paradox. Using data from the Multucultural Adolescents Panel Study(MAPS), this study examined the influence of Immigration Paradox on the relationship between the victimization experience of school violence and self-esteem. This study found the victimization experience of school violence is negatively associated with self-esteem. This paper also tests moderating effects of positive factors in bilingual socialization. The bilingual socialization has positive effects on the relationship between the victimization experience of school violence and self-esteem. The research findings provide directions for policy development that will focus on integrative acculturation approaches.
