초록

‘퀸의’ 리드 싱어 프레디 머큐리로 널리 알려진 파로크 불사라는 1946년 동아프리카의 섬 잔지바르에서 인도 출신의 ‘파르시’ 부모 사이에서 태어났다. 17세의 나이로 영국으로 이주한 불사라는 밴드 ‘퀸’의 결성과 더불어 세계적인 록스타로 부상하였다. 대중들의 각광을 받은 그의 화려한 삶의 이면에는 소수자로서의 또 다른 삶이 존재했다. 머큐리는 청소년기 영국으로 이주한 아프리카 식민지 출신 이민자이자, 동성애자였다. 머큐리는 이민자에 대한 편견이 격심했던 60년대 후반의 영국을 살아갔다. 그는 자신의 과거와 혈통을 드러내지 않음으로서 ‘영국적인 것’을 성공적으로 연출할 수 있었다. 본 연구는 머큐리가 자신의 출생과 과거의 삶, 가족 또는 종족에 대해서 드러내기를 꺼렸다는 점에 주목하면서, 그 이유를 그가 대영제국 식민지 출신 유색인종 이민자라는 점에서 찾는다. 본 연구는 첫째 머큐리가 새로운 정박지 런던에서 과거와 단절하고, 개명을 하는 과정을 분석하면서, ‘전설’이 되고자 열망한 젊은 이민자의 ‘크로스오버’의 의미를 탐색한다. 둘째 ‘퀸’의 히트곡 ‘보헤미안 랩소디’가 여태 머큐리의 동성애적 성향의 관점에서 주로 해석되어 왔다면, 본 연구는 젊은 이민자 머큐리의 관점에서 새롭게 읽어내고자 한다.

Farrokh Bulsara, who is well known as the lead vocalist of the rock band Queen, was born in 1946 in Zanzibar, an East African Island, to Parsi-Indian parents. He migrated to England at the age of 17. He formed the band Queen and rose up as a world-wide rock star. Away from the limelight, he had an another life: Mercury was an adolescent immigrant from an African colony into Britain and a sexual minority. Mercury lived in Britain in the last half of the 1960s, where anti-immigrant prejudice was strong. Not revealing his own past and origin, he could successfully perform “the British”. This study focuses why Mercury was reluctant to reveal his origin and past life, family and ethnicity. It figures it out from the fact that he is a colored immigrant from a colony of Great Britain. Analyzing that Mercury cut off himself from the past and renamed in London, his new settlement, it tries to interpret the meaning of the Break from the past of a young immigrant longing to be a “legend”. Unlike the prevailing interpretation of Bohemian Rhapsody, the greatest hit song of Queen, from the perspective of Mercury's homosexuality, this study sheds a light to interpret it from the perspective of a young immigrant Mercury.
